Ryan Coogler probably woke up feeling like the king of the world. As this morning’s nominations for the 98th Academy Awards concluded, Sinners racked up an impressive total count of 16 noms, beating a record of 14 held by James Cameron’s Titanic, All About Eve, and La La Land. It leads this year’s Oscar nominations, with One Battle After Another trailing close behind with 13. (Warner Bros. Discovery is also having the time of its life today.) Even without the introduction of the Achievement in Casting category, Sinners still would’ve broken the record with nominations in every technical category, including Editing, Costuming, Visual Effects, Score, and Production Design.
Costume designer Ruth E. Carter also made history when she earned her fifth nomination, making her the most-nominated Black woman in any category. Carter’s previous wins have been for both of Coogler’s Black Panther films. Alongside Carter, the film’s cinematographer Autumn Durald Arkapaw’s nomination marks a first as well, being the first woman of color nominated. Hell yeah, the women of Sinners! Alongside Arkapaw, Michael B. Jordan, Delroy Lindo (!!!), and Wunmi Mosaku also earned their first Oscar nominations in their respective acting categories while Ryan Coogler gets his first Best Director nom and his wife and co-producer, Zinzi Coogler, shares a nom for Best Picture. Wherever the Sinners crew is celebrating today, hopefully it’s far, far from Remmick.
