We’ve looked under the chairs and under the tables and came to the same conclusion: Bob Dylan is in a cheeky mood lately. Barely a week into his Outlaw Music Festival Tour with Willie Nelson, the known man has delighted concertgoers with new covers throughout his sets, including a fantastic “Garden Party” by Ricky Nelson that was debuted at his May 15 show — a tune that name-checks Dylan in one stanza. “And over in the corner much to my surprise,” he sung, “Mr. Hughes hid in Dylan’s shoes wearing his disguise.” (Mr. Hughes was an alias frequently used by George Harrison.) Now, Dylan has returned to Twitter after a short hiatus, sending the Who’s Pete Townshend a Who’s Next–coded birthday wish for turning 80. “Happy birthday Pete,” he wrote. “Who’s the new boss? Is he like the old boss? Have you met him yet? Say hello to Roger.” If Dylan wants to parlay this to another unexpected cover, may we suggest “The Seeker,” in which Daltrey snarls in desperation: “I asked Bobby Dylan, I asked the Beatles, I asked Timothy Leary but he couldn’t help me either.” There’s also some fantastic keyboard work from newly inducted Rock Hall member Nicky Hopkins. Let’s wait and see if Dylan seeks it out.
