Guess that’s the power of the puka-shell necklace? Childhood besties Matt Damon and Ben Affleck are getting money together both on- and offscreen. Boston’s prodigal sons will cash in on their decades-long friendship as Miami police officers who seize millions of dollars from a stash house in their latest collaboration, Joe Carnahan’s upcoming Netflix thriller The Rip. (“Rip” is cop parlance for the confiscation of weapons or drug-related funds.) A September 10 teaser trailer suggests that this police department — which includes officers played by Steven Yeun and Teyana Taylor — will also be facing some internal trust issues. A tattoo on Damon’s character’s hand serves as a permanent reminder of the question, “Are we the good guys?”
From appearing together as uncredited teenage extras in Field of Dreams to starring in and co-writing Good Will Hunting and The Last Duel, Damon and Affleck have been working together for decades. While the 2023 biopic Air was billed as the first time that Damon directed his Dunkin’ Donuts evangelist of a pal, Affleck clarified to IndieWire that they’re true to this, not new to this: “We did high school plays where he was like, ‘Dude, I think you should do it like this.’” Per GQ, Damon felt compelled to team up with his longtime friend again after watching Peter Jackson’s documentary Get Back, which closes with a title card informing viewers that the Beatles never worked together again. “‘Who cares if we oversaturate the marketplace with movies we’re both in?’” he recalled telling Affleck. “We’re crazy if we don’t take advantage of the fact that we are both still here and able to do this.” For his part, Affleck said that Damon is so good at his job that it’s “humbling” every time they act together.
