Nintendo is finally embracing Yoshi as the cutie patootie he is on the big screen. In a new Super Mario Galaxy first look at Yoshi, while trying to fix a broken pipe in the Sand Kingdom, Mario (Chris Pratt) and Luigi (Charlie Day) find and quickly adopt a scared Yoshi. He has big, shiny eyes and is squeaking like a little lost kitten. The brothers embrace the green dino as part of the Yoshi Distribution System, even if Toad doesn’t like that they’ve gotten a new sidekick. “So some dinosaur shows up, and he’s now a part of the group?” Toad asks as he tries to keep up with the new trio.
Yoshi easily surpasses Toad and even the newly confirmed Birdo as the most adorable character so far, and he doesn’t even need a bow to do so. But he is not immune to what looks like a childhood flashback of Mario and Luigi — video-game adaptations love their baby versions, even if they are a canon reference to Yoshi’s Island. In the last second of the teaser, Toad and Yoshi defend Baby Mario and Baby Luigi from a scientifically accurate dinosaur. Well, if you count running away as a defensive move.
