Does a box-office flop even count when it’s a passion project? Sydney Sweeney, at least, is okay with the fact that her boxing biopic, Christy, was not a knockout at the box office. She’s still “deeply proud of this movie,” she said in a November 10 Instagram carousel of stills and BTS moments. Christy made just $1.3 million at the box office in its opening weekend, putting it in the top ten all-time worst opening weekends for a movie opening on over 2,000 screens, per Box Office Mojo. “so yes I’m proud,” she wrote. “why? because we don’t always just make art for numbers, we make it for impact. and christy has been the most impactful project of my life.”
Sweeney stars as boxer Christy Martin throughout her successes in the ring as well as her abusive marriage to her much-older manager, James V. Martin (Ben Foster). “this film stands for survival, courage, and hope,” Sweeney wrote. “through our campaigns, we’ve helped raise awareness for so many affected by domestic violence. we all signed on to this film with the belief that christy’s story could save lives.” Intimate-partner violence is “a very personal issue that’s important to me,” Sweeney told Variety in an October 27 interview, adding, “I hope that through Christy and her story, it can raise more awareness.” “thank you to everyone who saw, felt, and believed and will believe in this story for years to come,” Sweeney said in her caption. “if christy gave even one woman the courage to take her first step toward safety, then we will have succeeded.”
