Sentimental Value reunites the team behind the much-beloved 2021 film The Worst Person in the World, and that movie’s many fans will be running to the theater with a smile on their faces, just like Julie. Like that film, Sentimental Value stars Renate Reinsve, is directed by Joachim Trier, and has a screenplay by Trier and Eskil Vogt. Their previous movie won Reinsve Best Actress at Cannes Film Festival 2021 and scored two Academy Award nominations — one for screenplay, the other for International Feature Film. Co-starring Stellan Skarsgård and Elle Fanning, Sentimental Value received rave reviews out of Cannes 2025, winning the Grand Prix. “Reinsve, with that phenomenally open, oval face, does an unreal job of transmitting emotions that Nora is barely aware that she’s feeling,” Vulture critic Alison Willmore wrote of the film. “Skarsgård is at turns infuriating, charming, and pitiable as an aging artist filled with regret, but also too stubborn to yield.”
Below, everything you need to know about the most anticipated movie of the year — for Letterboxd reviewers, at least.
The trailer arrives
In this film, Stellan Skarsgård might just be an even worse person. He plays Gustav Borg, a film director who has a bad relationship with his two daughters after abandoning their family. One of those daughters is Nora, played by Reinsve, a stage actress who refuses a part in Gustav’s newest film and is replaced by Rachel Kemp, a popular American actress played by Elle Fanning, who worries that the role should have been played by Nora. “I can’t work with him,” Nora says to Rachel in the trailer. “We can’t really talk. My father is a very difficult person.”
