Marty Supreme stars Timothée Chalamet as a cocky playboy ping-pong player, and that’s not even the most interesting part. Josh Safdie cast a series of actors who aren’t supposed to be starring in a movie in the first place, much less an A24 period ping-pong drama. First, there’s Gwyneth Paltrow, who hasn’t starred in a non-Marvel movie since 2015’s Mortdecai, slaying as an actress opening a newspaper and asking Marty, “This is you?” Then, there’s Kevin O’Leary, fresh from Shark Tank and better known as Mr. Wonderful, telling Chalamet, “You have no power here.” Finally, Tyler, the Creator, credited as “Tyler Okonma,” who just put out a hit album and goes toe to toe with A$AP Rocky in prestige film appearances this year. Oh, and hey, Fran Drescher is here, too, rounding out the cast with Odessa A’Zion and Abel Ferrara.

Timothée Chalamet’s unibrow and Paltrow’s big glasses compete for the film’s biggest breakouts. The trailer structures the “ping-pong” plot as a reveal — introducing Marty only as a young star at something, when Paltrow sees his name in the papers. Then, the camera pans through a table tennis tournament. “I’m telling you this game fills stadiums overseas,” Marty insists. “It’s only a matter of time ‘til I’m staring at you from the cover of a Wheaties box.” Well, at the very least he should warrant a fresh popcorn bucket.
Marty Supreme is an original film set in 1950s ping-pong culture, co-written and directed by the elder Safdie brother. It’s due out this Christmas, and what could be a nicer gift than watching a bunch of actors (and non-actors) take ping-pong really seriously?
