There are two aliens who stand before me, and I only have one photo in my hand. Thankfully, this isn’t America’s Next Top Model, and neither Superman nor Lilo and Stitch are in competition with one another. In fact, they’re allies. Alien allies. Superman is predicted to become the third-highest opening weekend box office of the year so far (and second of the summer), coming only third to Lilo and Stitch and Minecraft. Which is pretty good considering its PG-13 rating against more family friendly films. Superman’s estimated to earn around $120 million on the higher end of the box office spectrum, whereas Stitch earned $146 million domestically.
However, there is a win for Superman for this weekend. It’s now the highest box opening for a superhero movie this year, surpassing Captain America: Brave New World ($88 million) and Thunderbolts* ($74 million). Maybe it’s box office success has to do with the fact that there are more super-dogs in Superman; Krypto would be proud. Woof!
