If two things are true in this world, it’s that Emerald Fennell loves a disastrous love story and Jacob Elordi loves a little bling. A new batch of photos from Fennell’s adaptation of Wuthering Heights is here, and people are shocked to see Elordi, who is playing Heathcliff, sporting a gold tooth along with his mutton chops. Gone are the days of a bearded Elordi, and here is a sly little smile showing off the tooth cap on his right canine.
Following her first two hotly debated movies, Promising Young Woman and Saltburn, the critical response to Fennell’s version of Emily Brontë’s novel has been … less than enthusiastic. Elordi’s casting in particular drew a lot of criticism, considering his character is described as “dark-skinned” in the novel. (He’s also described as devastatingly hot, which Elordi can play just fine.)
So far, photos from the set suggest Fennell is putting her own spin on the tale, especially in the costume department. A shot of Margot Robbie, who is playing Catherine Earnshaw, in a white wedding dress has already made the rounds online with discussions of how wearing white to get married was not yet popular when the novel takes place. So what exactly is the deal with this little gold tooth?
While it seems gold fillings were invented by the 1800s, when Wuthering Heights is set (Brontë’s version, at least), they were extremely rare and used only for the richest of the rich. By the time Fennell’s Heathcliff was casually sporting a little gold tooth, they were only just being introduced across the pond. Seems like his dentist was very connected. Maybe that’s the story worth telling?
