Denis Villeneuve has cemented his status as the king of legacy IP retrofitting. Call him Chip Gaines, the way he’s flipping properties. Variety is reporting that Villeneuve will direct the first James Bond movie under Amazon’s imprimatur. And he’s super stoked to do it! “Some of my earliest movie-going memories are connected to 007. I grew up watching James Bond films with my father, ever since Dr. No with Sean Connery. I’m a die-hard Bond fan. To me, he’s sacred territory,” Villeneuve said.
Villeneuve brought Blade Runner into 2049, then brought Frank Herbert into cultural relevancy in a way David Lynch could not. Now he’s tackling Ian Fleming’s little murder freak. But how freaky is he going to get? And who will get their murder freak on, so to speak? Current betting odds (thanks, Gambling.com!) place Aaron Taylor-Johnson at the top of the 007 heap. But Villeneuve is mum on his Bond plans, except that he wants to “honor the tradition” of the series, while also opening “the path for many new missions to come,” he said. So that’s all he’s going to say on that.
