Senseless violence beat senseless remakes this weekend at the box office. Weapons beat out Freakier Friday with $42.5 million domestic and $70 million at the global box office. Zach Cregger’s follow-up to Barbarian is getting that See-It-Before-It’s-Spoiled bump, with a — forgive us — really freaky ending.
Maybe if Freakier Friday leaned into the titular freakiness a little more, the Lindsay Lohan vehicle could have topped the b.o. The film still did quite well, coming it at number 2 with $29 million domestically, $45 million globally. According to Deadline, the film did best on Friday, indicating it was appointment viewing for Lilo-heads and perhaps “ehhh, I’ll see it when it’s on Disney+” status for others.
At number 3 was The Fantastic Four: First Steps with $15.5 million domestically. Then The Bad Guys 2with $10.4 mil, and The Naked Gun with $8.37 million rounding out the top 5. With Cregger at number 1 and The Lonely Island’s Akiva Schaffer at number 5, it’s a huge weekend for comedy troupe cinema. Here’s hoping it never stops never stopping.
