You know, it’s the little things that matter the most. At least, that’s what the latest TikTok trend is trying to make you believe. People are posting their videos with the caption “Almost forgot that this is the whole point,” set to a beautiful and wistful piano riff. What “the whole point” is varies from person to person. For some, it’s a vacation in Chamonix. For others, it’s a bar that also serves cigarettes. Or jousters at the Ren Faire. For podcast host Drew Afualo, it’s getting your makeup done like Trixie Mattel.
The point is that anything can become beautiful and nostalgic when paired with one particular song. But this song has a longer, weirder provenance than people following the trend on TikTok may realize. As of writing, “Take My Hand,” by Matt Berry, is No. 10 in trending songs on TikTok. Yes, Matt “Regular Human Guy Jackie Daytona” Berry.

Matt Berry was a musician before he started his career in comedy, so his older music bubbles up from time to time. This specific song, “Take My Hand,” is off Berry’s 2011 album, Witchazel. By then, Berry was already British-comedy famous, hence Peter Serafinowicz supplying guest vocals.
Before it was the soundtrack to awe on TikTok, “Take My Hand” was the theme song to Berry’s comedic magnum opus, Toast of London. The show followed semi-washed-up actor and voice-over king Steven Toast, played by Berry. Toast sort of aimlessly wanders through life from gig to gig, making life harder for himself and those around him. The show’s Americanized spinoff, Toast of Tinseltown, saw Toast come to L.A. for a role in a Star Wars. Tinseltown is streaming on Roku, and it’s worth your time after you post your ironic TikTok. After all, laughter? That’s the whole point.
