DRAFT YOUR TEAM
A handful of films opened theatrically this weekend, running the gamut from major awards contender One Battle After Another to kids’ flick Gabby’s Dollhouse: The Movie to horror sequel The Strangers — Chapter 2. One Battle, the new Paul Thomas Anderson film, was shown in a variety of premium exhibition formats including VistaVision, 70-mm., and Imax. Those increased ticket prices helped contribute to a $22 million opening weekend — the biggest in PTA’s career. It earned 20 bonus points in the MFL for being the No. 1 movie of the week at the box office, yielding a total of 42 points for any team that selected it.
Gabby’s Dollhouse: The Movie finished second with $13 million, which translates to 13 points — a decent start for your $5 investment.

Another $5 buy, The Strangers — Chapter 2, only brought in $5 million. Last year’s Chapter 1 opened to $11 million, finishing domestically north of $35 million, so that’s an ominous step backward.
And the 562 players who drafted director Scarlett Johansson’s festival flick Eleanor the Great will have to wait until next week for it to earn its first MFL point: The $5 movie opened on around 900 screens and pulled in just north of $935,000. While unsurprising for the low-budget release, that’s less Eleanor the Great than Eleanor the Just Okay.
