It’s, of course, fine that the sequel to The Devil Wears Prada is called The Devil Wears Prada 2, but they really should have gone with the novel’s title: Revenge Wears Prada: The Devil Returns. Who’s the revenge? Who’s the devil? That’s for us to find out. After months of set photos and Anne Hathaway Instagram posts making their way around the internet, we finally get a taste of the sartorial chaos that is to come next spring. The first teaser trailer for the film has arrived with a not wholly unwelcome, but very obvious “Vogue” needle drop in a sequence that is 90 percent focused on the clicking heels of Meryl Streep’s Miranda Priestly.
Miranda makes her way to a corporate elevator — presumably at the offices of Runway — only to be interrupted by none other than Anne Hathaway’s Andy Sachs, who has gone full … well, Miranda Priestly. Andy’s got the signature sunglasses, orangey-red lipstick, and runway-inspired look to suggest she might finally give her old boss a run for her money. So is Miranda the devil who returns, and Andy is the revenge? Is Andy the devil now? The teaser is wise to bury the lede of the new film’s premise, which is focused in part on the decline of traditional media. No one goes to see these things for prescient media commentary. We’re all just there for the outfits, and the teaser trailer has a whopping two of them.
