James Gunn’s new DCU reboot, which begins July 11 with Superman, is getting off to a smashing start: Reviews are positive, and the movie had the biggest preview night of any movie in 2025, raking in $22.5 million, per Deadline. Next up for the reinvigorated universe is Supergirl. House of the Dragon’s Milly Alcock is playing the character in the new DCU, and she cameos at the end of Superman, stumbling in drunk and picking up her dog Krypto from her burlier cousin. Below, find everything we know so far about our next Supermovie.
Who is Supergirl, exactly?
Supergirl, despite being a household name, is not that common on the big screen — this will be only the second Supergirl film in history, after a 1984 film starring Helen Slater was a famous bomb. A cousin of Superman, she’s most famously been portrayed in the 21st century by Melissa Benoist on the CW series Supergirl. Onscreen, Supergirl has historically been portrayed as a kind, good-hearted, polished girl — not dissimilar to Superman, in fact.
That does not appear to be what the new DCU is going for. In her Superman cameo, Alcock’s Supergirl is portrayed as an irresponsible party girl whose lack of ability to train Krypto leads the dog to be the non-listener he is. She’s gonna be fun.
Who else is on the team?
Alcock will be facing off against the Belgian actor Matthias Schoenaerts, who will be playing Krem of the Yellow Hills. In the 2021–22 comic series Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Krem faces off against Supergirl after angering her by shooting Krypto. 3 Body Problem’s Eve Ridley will play a young girl named Ruthye, and Supergirl’s parents will be played by David Krumholtz and Emily Beecham.

Jason Momoa, famous for being one of the few universally agreed-upon “good parts” of the DC universe as Aquaman, is returning to Gunn’s new DCU, but this time as Lobo. Momoa confirmed his casting on Instagram in December 2024 by quoting himself. “I always wanted to play Lobo because I’m like, ‘Hello? It’s the perfect role,’” Momoa said previously. He captioned the post, “They called.” Lobo is an anti-hero alien and has never been portrayed before on film.
Behind the camera, Craig Gillespie (Cruella) will be directing the film, with a script by playwright Ana Nogueira.
When is it going to be released?
Supergirl will be released on June 26, 2026, which is great because a messy-girl superhero movie is a perfect fit for Pride Month.
