Moana is setting sail from Motunui. In the first teaser for Disney’s live-action (read: CGI) redo, we meet our new Polynesian princess, played by Catherine Laga’aia, who belts out “How Far I’ll Go.” Besides getting reintroduced to the beloved main theme, we also get reunited with Dwayne Johnson, who gets his fishhook back to reprise his role as Maui. But we don’t really get a good, long look at him before he shape-shifts back into an eagle, one of many creatures needed to return the heart of Te Fiti. It’s Moana, after-all.
The film follows the same Oscar-winning plot as before: Moana tries to save her island from starvation with the help of Maui, a disgraced demigod. Joining them are John Tui, Frankie Adams, and Rena Owen as Moana’s father, mother, and grandmother. Unfortunately, Alan Tudyk isn’t reprising his role as the rooster HeiHei, primarily because of a common misconception of his character. “Everybody calls Heihei a chicken, even though he’s a rooster,” Tudyk told Gold Derby. “So it’s about time they got an actress to put a little more ‘chick’ in the chicken.” Directed by Thomas Kail, the live-action remake is written by Jared Bush and Dana Ledoux Miller, both of whom wrote for Moana 2. Moana’s making a splash next summer on July 10, 2026. You’re welcome.
