Conan O’Brien: master of the Oscars, Mark Twain Prize Honoree, and now a CGI toy who will either become friends with Woody and Buzz or terrorize them in a new era of children’s amusement. O’Brien announced on Instagram that he will be playing a new character named Smartypants in the upcoming installment, Toy Story 5. “Initially, I wanted the role of Woody, but they told me that they already promised that to Tom Hanks,” O’Brien joked. “I said, ‘Okay, how about Buzz Lightyear?’” However, despite the main roles going back to Hanks and Tim Allen, O’Brien seemed happy with the cards he was dealt. “It’s the best character of them all. I far prefer this character. I don’t even wanna play Woody or Buzz anymore, even if they beg me.” He ends the video by pointing out how “insane” his hair looks as he burns red with laughter, maybe that part wasn’t in the announcement notes.

The logline describes the fifth film in the franchise as “Toy meets Tech” as the gang battles a “new threat to playtime.” Considering his name is “Smartypants,” O’Brien will probably play some sort of electronic learning toy, like a Leapster, or if we wanna get really modern with it, an app on an iPad, or even a YouTuber— at the very least some sort of Cocomelon, Blippi type character. He’s got the energy for it.
