Movies are back, baby. Lilo & Stitch and Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning have joined forces to deliver the biggest Memorial Day weekend box office in history, according to Variety. Lilo & Stitch brought in $145.5 million domestically over the weekend, and is projected to get a cumulative $180 once Memorial Day is through. And sorry to Mr. Cruise, but the live-action Lilo & Stitch has now surpassed Top Gun: Maverick for the biggest Memorial Day opening ever.
But it’s not like Tom Cruise almost dying for our enjoyment hasn’t paid off for Paramount. The film had a series best opening with $63 domestically, projected to hit $77 million through Monday. Combined with the already overperforming Final Destination: Bloodlines, Thunderbolts*, and Sinners, this weekend is the best Memorial Day b.o. in history, with a collective $322 million in ticket sales. This beats previous record holder, Memorial Weekend 2013. That say $314 in sales across Fast & Furious 6, The Hangover Part III and Star Trek Into Darkness.
