A sequel? For a beloved movie from almost 20 years ago that already closed the book quite neatly? Groundbreaking. Yes, a Devil Wears Prada sequel is in the works with nearly all of the original leading actors in talks to reprise their roles from the 2006 movie. Here’s what we know.
Is the cast coming back?
Last year, Puck first reported that Meryl Streep and Emily Blunt had been brought back into the fold as Miranda Priestly and Emily Charlton, respectively. It was later reported that Anne Hathaway and Stanley Tucci would also be reprising their roles as Andy Sachs and Nigel Kipling, with director David Frankel back at the helm. Adrian Grenier, however, will not be reprising his role as Nate, Andy’s reasonably upset boyfriend.
What will the sequel be about?
The film’s screenwriter, Aline Brosh McKenna, has reportedly come aboard, and we already have some details about the story. Streep’s Anna Wintour–inspired Miranda Priestly is at the end of her career as the editor-in-chief of Runway, dealing with the slow death of print media. Blunt’s character, Emily (whose last name is apparently Charlton?), has worked her way up from top assistant to “high-powered executive at a Kering- or LVMH-style luxury group” that holds all the advertising dollars. You see where this is going. Now, Miranda needs Emily.
That is a pretty good idea for a sequel, to be honest. It changes up the power dynamics, it brings the story to the present day, and it tackles an issue that the average movie-goer deeply cares about: how to create a profitable media brand in the 2020s.
It’s yet to be revealed how Hathaway’s and Tucci’s characters will fit into the plot. Hopefully, Nigel has extricated himself from the toxic work environment of Runway, but that seems unlikely. Andy’s story ended with her getting hired at the New York Mirror based on the strength of her college reporting on janitors’ unions and Priestly’s recommendation. What would she be doing 18 years later? Maybe Miranda will try to hire her back to add some prestige to the magazine, only to be told that Andy is making way too much money on Substack to accept the offer.

Will there be new characters?
I mean, yes, obviously there will be new people in this film, but there is one very exciting new piece of casting. Kenneth Branagh has joined the cast to play Miranda’s new husband. Will he be the man who can finally handle her success, or will he have an affair with Stanley Tucci’s character? It could really go in either direction.
Have they started shooting?
In late June, 20th Century Studios announced that filming had begun on the sequel. In a collab post with Hathaway and Tucci, the studio shared a video of red stilettos with pitchforks for heels, set to some of the iconic lines from the original movie. “Now in production,” read the caption.

Is there a release date?
This is honestly the most fab part of the whole thing so far. The official release date is May 1, 2026, which you might have already figured out is the first weekend in May, right before the Met Gala. Imagine how amazing it must have felt to have that idea.
That’s all we know now, but we’ll keep updating as details come in.
