Maybe this is what will make high-school students want to read. The hit Broadway play John Proctor Is the Villain is going to the big screen, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed on July 18. The original playwright, Kimberly Belflower, will adapt the play for Universal, which won the rights in a “competitive situation.” Sadie Sink, who scored a Tony nomination for her role as Shelby Holcomb, will executive-produce the film. No casting has been confirmed yet, though Sink’s involvement gives us hope that she’ll make the transfer — she has to do something once Stranger Things finally finishes up with its fifth season, which premieres Thanksgiving Eve.
Set in a high-school English class as it discusses Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, the play focuses on five bright young women navigating various sexual-misconduct allegations against men they trust amid the Me Too era. The film version will be produced by Tina Fey and Ben Platt’s dad, Marc.
