If Shrek 5 is good, it will be worth the wait. Or at least that’s what we’re telling ourselves. What’s the holdup, and why is it interfering with our dream Christmas quadruple feature: Shrek’s Ice Dune Doomsday? The release date has been pushed back to summer 2027, but it’s important to think of the positives, like the original cast and potential to bring back the Baskin-Robbins Shrek flavors. Below, all the info we’ve got about more Shrek, including when it’s finally out in theaters.
When’s the release date?
On August 11, Dreamworks announced another delay to Shrek 5, now scheduled for June 30, 2027, Fourth of July weekend. The movie’s release date has moved around quite a bit, first from July 1, 2026, to December 23, 2026. But it must have had way too much competition with Avengers: Doomsday, Dune: Part III, and Ice Age 6 planned.

Who’s heading to the swamp?
Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz are all returning for Shrek 5, with Zendaya joining the trio. Murphy told Collider on June 24 that he was partway through recording the voices for Shrek 5, a process that had begun “months ago.”
But wait, there’s more?
There sure is! Murphy will also voice Donkey in a Donkey spinoff film that has not yet begun recording, he told Collider. If we had our way, that movie would just be Donkey and Dragon hosting a dinner party, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? style. Maybe with Gingy and Pinocchio as the younger couple? Just Shrek-balling here.
Is there any plan to adapt Shrek: The Musical?
Not that we know of, but there certainly should be. In the meantime, continue to listen to “Who I’d Be” and cry.
