Thank God we didn’t get raptured so we could witness this. Since the world didn’t end on Tuesday, Gucci was able to kick off Milan Fashion Week by premiering a star-studded film, The Tiger, in lieu of a typical runway show. Written by Spike Jonze and Halina Reijn, the 30-minute short stars Moore as the mother of Palmer, Page, and a conspiratorial Edward Norton. Naturally, the cast — which includes Ed Harris, Alia Shawkat, Julianne Nicholson, Heather Lawless, and Ronny Chieng, as well as real-life models Kendall Jenner and Alex Consani — is surreptitiously modeling clothes from creative director Demna’s debut collection for Gucci, “La Famiglia.”
Film seems to be in vogue in the fashion world at the moment. Per The Hollywood Reporter, Gucci backed Chris Evans and Anya Taylor-Joy’s Sacrifice at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, while Yves Saint Laurent’s film division was behind last year’s Oscar-nominated Emilia Pérez and this year’s Father Mother Sister Brother, which took home the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival. The Tiger acknowledges its connection by offering an in-universe explanation for all of its Gucci looks: Moore is playing Barbara Gucci, who runs an alternate version of Gucci and also serves as the chairman of California. She invites her children to dinner with a Vanity Fair writer (Harris) who is profiling her and whom she is anxious to impress, but the evening takes a turn when she and her family accidentally get a little high. Maybe it’s not quite the same as floating up to heaven in rapture, but for a half-hour film, it’s a hell of a trip.
