It’s unclear whether Ariana Grande is done being a pop girlie For Good, but her main focus for now definitely seems to be her acting career. The Wicked and Meet the Parents 4 star has booked yet another big-screen role, this time in the voice cast of an animated adaption of Oh, the Places You’ll Go!, the Dr. Seuss kids’ picture book and eternal graduation gift. But don’t give up hope on hearing fresh Grande vocals — it seems likely that she will be singing for this project, given it’s being described as a musical with original songs by Dear Evan Hansen duo Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. Details about the plot and general vibe of the project are currently sparse, so who knows? Maybe Ari will end up hitting whistle notes on the soundtrack and turning this into Oh, the Places Yuh–’ll Go!.
What has been confirmed is that the film will reunite Grande with Wicked’s Jon M. Chu, who will co-direct alongside Monsters, Inc. writer and Open Season director Jill Culton. Josh Gad is joining Grande in the cast, as Warner Bros. announced via an Instagram photo of the duo in a recording booth posted on July 14. The design on the matching binders that Grande and Gad are holding is a nod to the 1990 source material, which features rhyming lines (“When you’re in a Slump, you’re not in for much fun. / Un-slumping yourself is not easily done,” “Congratulations! / Today is your day. / You’re off to Great Places! / You’re off and away!”) and tells a second-person story about a traveler who encounters ups and downs after leaving town. How will the book translate into a movie with a full cast of characters? We’ll find out when Oh, the Places You’ll Go! starts going places — including Imax theaters — on March 17, 2028.
