Travis Scott says he still thinks about the 2021 Astroworld tragedy. In a new Rolling Stone cover story, Scott discussed how he doesn’t want to go where he’s not welcome, even if that’s his hometown. “I would love to heal that in the city. But I would also want people to be receptive,” he said. “I don’t want to force a reception.”
Over four years ago, 10 people died and hundreds were injured at Scott’s Astroworld Festival. Fans rushed the stage during Scott’s headlining set, resulting in a crowd crush. The youngest person killed was 9. A Houston grand jury declined to press criminal charges against Scott, and the rapper and LiveNation have since settled most of the resulting wrongful-death lawsuits.
Any tragedy on that scale would have impacted Scott, but that it happened in Houston weighs on him. “When I did that festival, I was trying to bring something to where I’m from,” he told Rolling Stone, “and when you look back, it’s like a time that was supposed to be so enjoyable just went wrong.”
