After making approximately a bazillion dollars at the box office in May and trouncing the career of one Mr. Tom Cruise, should any of us be surprised that Stitch, Disney’s lovable and mischievous blue alien, will return for a round two? On June 26, Disney announced via Instagram that Stitch would return in Lilo & Stitch 2 in a video depicting the little critter zooming around Disney Studios’s backlot in his pink convertible with no Lilo in sight. Whether this is another live-action adaptation of the original sequel, the direct-to-video 68-minute film Lilo & Stitch: Stitch Has a Glitch remains to be seen.
There is a deep bench of characters and stories in the greater Lilo & Stitch universe, and it’s possible this upcoming sequel could draw on any of the characters from Lilo & Stitch: The Series, which ran from 2003 to 2006. That show featured a number of bonus experiments, including Angel, Stitch’s love interest or “boojiboo,” as they say. Will Angel be in the live-action sequel? She should be. Finally an animated character answers the question: What if Stitch was pink and a girl? The sky — well, the galaxy — is the limit when it comes to this franchise, with endless possibilities for endless profit. All we want here is for Billy Magnussen’s Pleakley to come back. Please: We need more Pleakley, maybe this time in a dress.
