Timothée Chalamet found his perfect part. In the trailer for Josh Safdie’s Marty Supreme, Marty Mauser displays a single-minded ambition to become the world’s biggest ping-pong champion, not unlike Chalamet as an actor. “What do you plan to do if this dream of yours doesn’t work out?” Gwyneth Paltrow’s character probes. Marty responds without hesitation: “That doesn’t even enter my consciousness.” His determination neatly matches up with Chalamet’s own declaration, “I’m really in pursuit of greatness.” “I know people don’t usually talk like that, but I’m inspired by the greats,” he continued in his 2025 SAG Awards acceptance speech for A Complete Unknown. By the end of the November 11 trailer, Marty promises, “It’s only a matter of time before I’m staring at you from the cover of a Wheaties box.”
Fans will recognize the chaotic urgency of the Safdie brothers’ Uncut Gems in this movie, too, despite the loss of Josh’s brother, Benny. Like Adam Sandler’s Howard Ratner before him, Marty is constantly running around NYC and getting into fights with the supporting players. Paltrow, as a pampered rich wife and former actress named Kay Stone, opens the trailer by dressing him down, but Shark Tank’s Kevin O’Leary (a.k.a. Mr. Wonderful) as her wealthy husband Milton Rockwell also makes an impression. “Marty, I’m gonna make you an offer,” he says, sounding like … himself. Tyler Okonma, better known as Tyler, the Creator, is balling out with Marty as his bestie, Wally. And Odessa A’zion, who is currently making a splash as influencer Tallulah on I Love LA, screams, “Have you ever thought about what you’re doing to me?” as Marty’s girlfriend, Rachel. (Not featured in this trailer is Fran Drescher, who will play Marty’s mother.) Marty Supreme comes out on Christmas, marking Chalamet’s third yuletide movie in as many years. Will this do as well as Wonka and A Complete Unknown? Marty Mauser would think so.
