Harvey Weinstein was convicted on one of three sex-crime charges on June 11 in a mixed verdict after successfully appealing his 2020 conviction, per the New York Times. He was found guilty of a first-degree criminal sexual act, for forcibly performing oral sex on Miriam “Mimi” Haley, a former Project Runway producer. However, he was found not guilty of a second count of a first-degree sexual act, for allegedly orally assaulting Kaja Sokola. The jury reached no verdict on his count of third-degree rape against Jessica Mann. The Times reported that the jury foreman told the judge that there was fighting among the jury during deliberations including “yelling and screaming.”
Weinstein was initially convicted of rape and sexual assault in 2020 in New York, but his case was successfully appealed in 2024, leading to a new trial when he was recharged by the Manhattan DA in 2025. The original verdict was overturned after an appeals court ruled that Judge James M. Burke incorrectly permitted testimony from victims who were not part of the indictment. The appeals court wrote that “it is an abuse of judicial discretion to permit untested allegations of nothing more than bad behavior that destroys a defendant’s character but sheds no light on their credibility as related to the criminal charges lodged against them.” The 2025 trial was a result of Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg opting to retry Weinstein but with just three accusers.

Haley and Mann both testified at the original trial, but Sokola was new to this proceeding. Haley testified that, while she was working on Project Runway in 2006, a Weinstein Company production, she went to Weinstein’s Soho house where he allegedly performed nonconsensual oral sex on her. Sokola also alleges that Weinstein physically assaulted her in a hotel in 2006 and forcibly performed oral sex on her. Mann testified that he raped her in a hotel room in Manhattan in 2013.
Following the verdict, Weinstein still has to contend with other legal battles. He is currently appealing his 2022 conviction in Los Angeles, for which he was sentenced to 16 years in prison, per PBS. Additionally, Weinstein is in the process of suing his brother and former business partner, Bob Weinstein, and Weinstein Company executive David Glasser for fraud. The jury will return on June 21 to share a verdict on the third charge.
