There has always been something eerie about hotel rooms: the fuzzy TV, the rumble of the air-conditioning, the harsh overhead lighting, the feeling that maybe you’re not alone in your space because the members of HAIM are moving your things around and breathing in your ear. That last one may simply be unique to Logan Lerman, the latest nonthreatening boy to take center stage in HAIM’s new album rollout. Their latest single, “Down to Be Wrong,” has a bit of a Shania Twain vibe with Danielle’s anger tearing through the minimalist guitar and drums. Directed by Bradley & Pablo and shot by Larkin Seiple, the video sees Lerman stalk around a barren hotel room while the Haim sisters empty out his wallet, turn on the TV, and futz with his things. Listen, you try getting a good night’s sleep with three musicians jumping on your bed. Their chaotic cigarette lighting and item throwing feels akin to the backward chronology of their previous video for “Relationships,” in which the sisters dip in and out of frame, lounging and wreaking havoc in the aftermath of heartbreak. Lerman skulks in weary frustration before leaving the room, the ghosts of whatever relationship he’s meant to represent left behind.
HAIM’s album I Quit will be out June 20 with cover art shot by their old pal Paul Thomas Anderson. At least they haven’t quit working with him.
