The Fantastic Four: First Steps stretched and stretched as far as it could, and it almost beat out Minecraft as the biggest opening day of the year. The second reboot of the superhuman astronauts made around $57 million on Friday and during preview screenings — Minecraft made $57.11 million during its first day. A warm welcome for baby Franklin! How does the Fab Four compare to its super-rival, Clark Kent? They’re performing pretty equally, actually. F4 just surpassed Superman’s first-day opening of $56 million, for a difference of $900,000-1 million. So stretched isn’t an overstatement, but Fantastic Four is on track to follow a similar route to James Gunn’s Superman for an estimated $120-125 million total weekend haul.
Globally, F4 is doing pretty well. Deadline estimated that they’re going to score a worldwide box office of around $220-230 million — again, same as Superman’s global opening. Guess Mr. Fantastic is also a punk rocker.
