Here it is, the moment you’ve all been waiting for. Rob Lowe has finally shared his opinion on Babygirl and, more broadly, sex scenes in movies. Now we can all rest easy knowing that the ’80s heartthrob turned TV mainstay did, in fact, find it hot when Harris Dickinson invited Nicole Kidman to that hotel.
On Lowe’s podcast, Literally!, the topic of sex scenes in movies came up with guest Kristin Davis. While discussing their various connections, Lowe brought up his 1988 film, Masquerade, in which he and Kim Cattrall (Davis’s Sex and the City co-star) share a sex scene that was deemed “too sexy” by the studio. “It was pretty gratuitous, but it was great,” Lowe said. Davis agreed, saying, “It was sexy! I wish we had sexy movies now.”
Lowe then complained that there are no sex scenes in movies anymore, and was quickly corrected by Davis, who said she had not seen Babygirl but heard there was some onscreen sex in that movie. (She heard correctly.)
“Oh, I’ve seen it. I take it back,” Lowe said. “It’s pretty great. It’s pretty hot. Babygirl’s great.”
While Lowe apparently enjoyed watching Kidman drink that big glass of milk, he did balk at the idea that doing a sex scene, in Babygirl or otherwise, is “brave.” “They’re like, ‘Oh, it’s so brave. She’s so brave,’” Lowe said of people’s reaction to Kidman’s performance (which, you may recall, she said gave her “burnout” from orgasming on-camera so much). “She’s brave because she has a sex scene. That’s brave now. And, in our day, it was required.”
Hmm. You can see what he’s getting at here — there is less sex in movies nowadays and people are prudish about it — but he’s also comparing baring his torso at 24 to 57-year-old Nicole Kidman getting lightly dommed by her Gen-Z intern. But, hey, I’m glad we all finally know where he stands on the matter. Which West Wing cast member will weigh in on sex-scene discourse next? Fingers crossed for Martin Sheen!
