While promoting her new Ari Aster–directed film, Eddington, on the Cannes red carpet on May 16, Emma Stone was attacked! By a bee. Though she ultimately left the scene alive and seemingly unharmed, Stone had to bob and weave to counter the bee’s persistent ambush. Luckily, her gallant Eddington co-stars Austin Butler and Pedro Pascal were there to protect her from the crazed abeille. They launched a counter, blowing on the bee and swatting at him. We’re a little surprised that the bee came for Stone specifically, seeing as just earlier this week, Heidi Klum walked the Cannes carpet in a dress that looked like a giant pink flower, while Stone was wearing a stiff, rather non-pollinating pale-pink bib.

The bee’s motives are not yet known, but a dissection of the bee’s social-media accounts indicate that he was a Lily Gladstone stan. Experts have theorized that the attack may have been due to residual anger over the 2024 Oscar race, in which Stone ultimately won Best Actress for Poor Things over Gladstone in Killers of the Flower Moon. Gladstone is a notable bee fan, having called herself a “bee nerd.” She has additionally told Stephen Colbert that she became a bee fan after saving a bee from her dog and nursing said bee back to health by keeping him as a pet, feeding him a mixture of honey and water, and naming him Bee-alzabub. No direct connection has yet been drawn between Bee-alzabub and the French bee, but it is currently being investigated. Killers of the Flower Moon premiered at Cannes in 2023, so it is possible that Gladstone made contact with the bee, or someone in his hive, at that year’s festival. Eddington comes out in theaters July 18, and Stone will be in it, stung or not.
