It’s already been four years since the last James Bond movie, Daniel Craig’s Bond swan song, No Time to Die, was released in theaters, and, in that lull, there’s still no new actor cast as James Bond. The longest the world has ever gone without a Bond movie since the first movie, Dr. No, was released in 1962 was six years — between the Timothy Dalton–starring 1989 film License to Kill and Pierce Brosnan’s introduction in 1995’s GoldenEye. Now, it’s looking like the current streak will break that record. But never despair — in 2025, there’s been real movement on the Bond front, with a confirmed director, two new producers, and, as of August 1, a confirmed screenwriter. Below, find everything we know so far about James Bond’s next mission.
Who is working on it?
Amazon MGM, the studio now producing Bond movies, confirmed on August 1 that Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight will write the next Bond film. “It has always been on my bucket list, and it’s fantastic to be invited to do it — I can’t wait to get started,” Knight told BBC Radio 5. “I’m hoping that, being a Bond fan for so many years, it will be imbued into me and I will be able to produce something that’s the same but different, and better, stronger, and bolder.” He’ll be working with the previously announced director, Denis Villeneuve (Dune). Amy Pascal (the Spider-Man franchise) and David Heyman (the Harry Potter franchise) will produce.

Who is the new James Bond?
That information is still classified to the public. When asked about it, screenwriter Knight told BBC Radio 5 that it “is a very, very good question, and one I can’t give you the answer to.” It is unclear if he can’t answer because he does not want to spill the beans or if he simply does know the answer.
The most consistently rumored actor has been Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Nosferatu, Kick-Ass). One former Bond, Pierce Brosnan, did tell Yahoo in 2025 that Taylor-Jonson “would be great” if he wanted it. Tom Holland is another candidate, who worked with Pascal when he was cast as Spider-Man. He is reportedly at the top of the wish list for Amazon, per Variety, alongside Euphoria’s Jacob Elordi and Babygirl’s Harris Dickinson.
Why has it taken so long?
The new Bond has been stuck in development hell. In 2021, Amazon bought MGM and with it, the rights to Bond. However, Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson maintained creative control of the franchise and Broccoli was not vibing with the Amazon leadership, reportedly calling them “fucking idiots.” In February, Amazon ponied up for the creative rights to Bond, and got to work hiring Pascal and Heyman, who brought in Villeneuve and now Knight for the project.
When is it coming out?
Amazon MGM is currently eyeing a 2028 release date for the next Bond, per Variety. To be fair, a new British spy movie does sound like a good balm for our next election year.
