This guy and Bob Ferguson would get along famously and spend all night talking about crackling tube sounds. Glen Powell’s Saturday Night Live hosting debut took a turn into Aja territory thanks to the pretaped sketch “I Miss My Ex’s Dad,” with Powell’s ponytailed patriarch lamenting the recent breakup between his daughter and her boyfriend. The replacement, in fact, has one irredeemable flaw: “Oh, Liam, I miss you, I’m your No. 1 fan / Her new boyfriend didn’t like my story about meeting Steely Dan.” Powell’s character even has a framed photo of himself, Donald Fagen, and the late Walter Becker among his prized possessions. And the new boyfriend doesn’t care! At all! The Steely Dan snub serves as the breaking point for this father with incredibly good music taste, and … well, you can watch the rest and find out. Then, to cool down, rewatch One Battle After Another’s “Dirty Work” scene while doing some karate. Just remember to breathe.
