Brent Hinds, former singer-guitarist of the heavy metal band Mastodon, died in a motorcycle crash at the age of 51 on August 20. Hinds was riding a Harley-Davidson in the downtown-Atlanta area when a driver in a BMW SUV reportedly “failed to yield while turning left,” crashing into Hinds, per Atlanta police. Medical professionals pronounced the singer dead at the scene. An investigation is ongoing.

“We are heartbroken, shocked, and still trying to process the loss of this creative force with whom we’ve shared so many triumphs, milestones, and the creation of music that has touched the hearts of so many,” the Atlanta-based band wrote on Instagram on August 21.

In March 2025, Hinds and Mastodon “mutually parted ways” after 25 years together. However, earlier this month, Hinds wrote in several Instagram comments that he was actually kicked out of the band by the other members, Troy Sanders, Bill Kelliher, and Brann Dailor. “I won’t miss being in a band with horrible humans,” Hinds wrote in one comment. He also claimed that the band felt he was “embarrassing them for being who I am.” At the time, his former bandmates had not responded to his comments. During their time as a band, Mastodon earned six Grammy nominations and one win for Best Metal Performance with “Sultan’s Curse.”
