Police in Rio de Janeiro say they have arrested to suspects in connection with a plot to bomb the massive Lady Gaga concert that took place Saturday night. The Associated Press reports that the alleged plot was aimed at attacking the LGBTQIA+ community. “They were clearly saying that they were planning an attack at Lady Gaga’s concert motivated by sexual orientation,” Rio police secretary Felipe Cury said in a press conference. Rio police chief Luiz Lima added that the suspects spewed hate speech online in order to attract more viewers, more participants — most of them teenagers, many of them children.” The two were arrested hours before the show, which saw over two million attendees and actually broke a world record.
In previous concert-centered terror plots, like when Taylor Swift was supposed to play Vienna in August 2024, the concert was canceled. A spokesperson for Lady Gaga said she and her team had no knowledge of the suspected bombing plot before or during the concert. “Prior to and during the show, there were no known safety concerns, nor any communication from the police or authorities to Lady Gaga regarding any potential risks,” they said.
