Wicked: For Good’s Second Week Is Good, Not Great

by thenowvibe_admin

Is Wicked: For Good’s box office defying gravity? Yeah, that’s a song from the first Wicked, but you get the idea. The second installment of Elphaba’s villain origin story came in at number 2 at the box office, behind Zootopia 2. That was expected, although just how well Z2 is doing internationally (especially in China) surpassed prognosticators predictions. But what all good Ozians want to know is if Wicked: For Good is tracking to surpass the b.o. of Wicked. It’s a tall order, as Wicked eventually passed Mamma Mia! to enter the top 5 highest grossing musicals ever filmed.

Wicked: For Good flew over its prequel opening weekend. It raked in $143 million domestically, compared to Wicked’s $112 million opening last year. But the second week drop off was steep. For Good brought in $93 million over the long Thanksgiving weekend domestically. That’s slightly down from Wicked’s $118 million in its second week. Wicked 1 actually had a better second weekend than first. Internationally, For Good brought in another $29.4 million this weekend, for a global total of $393.3 million after 10 days. There’s still plenty of time for Wicked: For Good to catch up to, or even surpass, Wicked’s final tally of $759 million. If Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 doesn’t murder the competition next weekend.
