Mariah Carey is preparing to launch her new album, Here for It All, and, as such, is making the necessary publicity rounds to remind us all that no one can out-diva Mimi. In a conversation with Harper’s Bazaar UK, the five-time Grammy winner was asked which “female divas” she most admires. Unsurprisingly, Carey responded, “I’m going to have to go with me!”
This is totally normal and acceptable behavior for a singer who has sold over 220 million records worldwide and scored 19 No. 1 hits, trailing closely behind the Beatles. Considering Carey is celebrating the 20th anniversary of The Emancipation of Mimi, the genre-shattering album that features collaborations with Pharrell Williams and Jermaine Dupri, she has more than earned the right to both claim and define the word diva. After all, we are talking about a woman who didn’t realize stilettos would be inappropriate footwear to scale the Great Wall of China.

Like any pop star who has sustained a decadeslong career and multiple divorces, Carey needs to stay abreast of the current pop landscape. When asked which pop artists she listens to, she admitted she likes Tate McRae, Sabrina Carpenter, and Olivia Rodrigo — but only because, as the outlet put it, “she likes to keep up with what’s on her teenage daughter’s playlist.” (She shares 14-year-old twins Monroe and Moroccan with ex-husband Nick Cannon.) I wonder if the twins have told her about Carpenter’s Netflix Christmas special?
