There are a few low-stakes conspiracy theories that amuse me. Our world leaders are all lizards, for example, or that birds aren’t real. But Lea Michele not being able to read is my favorite — it’s silly, no one actually believes it, and it’s been going on long enough that it feels like everyone is in on the joke. After eight years, though, Michele is finally providing us with the cold hard evidence that she can, in fact, read.
On an episode of Therapuss with Jake Shane released on May 7, Michele finally put the rumors to rest. After bringing up the absurd rumor, she grabbed a printed-out sheet of fan-submitted questions from Shane and began reading them (!!) out loud. “Jonathan [Groff] is not here to read me this shit,” she said.

Before this literary feat, she told Shane that her feelings about the rumor oscillate. “It depends on the day,” she said. “Sometimes I think it’s crazy that people care enough about me that they would make up something,” she explained. “That someone has so little to do in their life and their day that they would waste it on me is hilarious to me. And then there are moments where I fucking get so frustrated by it because I’m one of the only women in my whole family to get accepted to college.”
“My mother and my mother’s whole family was extremely poor, from the Bronx, not very well educated, and my parents moved me from the Bronx to New Jersey to get a good education and to thrive, and I did,” she said. “And my parents and my family are so proud of that. It really was so important for my grandmother to see me, and for someone to minimize that, it’s so sad and so frustrating. But, yeah, it’s wild.”
There you have it! Lea Michele can read. I wonder what conspiracy her haters will think of next. For instance: How does she feel about birds?
