Anyone who’s gone through a breakup knows that work can be a good distraction. Or, if you’re Katy Perry and Jennifer Lopez, work is actually a great place to talk about your post-breakup feelings. The two newly single singers have been turning their respective splits into mid-concert fodder, and honestly? It seems to be working for them.
At a show in Inglewood, California, on Tuesday, Perry seemed to get a little vulnerable about her recent breakup with Orlando Bloom, her fiancé of six years. During the “Choose Your Own Adventure” segment of her concert, where the crowd votes on which song they want to hear, fans selected her song “Not Like the Movies.” After seeing the results, per People, Perry asked fans, “You’re gonna make me sing this song in this time in my life?”
Perry told the audience she wrote the song “in my 20s … after my first divorce.” (“Not Like the Movies” came out in 2010, while she was married to Russell Brand, though it’s also possible she’s referring to her 2009 breakup with singer Travie McCoy.) Perry warned fans it might be a tough one for her to sing, saying she would “try and hold my composure while I sing it a week before my period.” It seems like she did pretty well.

Meanwhile, Jennifer Lopez, who finalized her fourth divorce earlier this year, appears to be in a different breakup stage — specifically the one where she’s done with marriage altogether. On Wednesday, the day after Perry’s show, Lopez performed in Bilbao, Spain. At one point, according to video from the show, Lopez spotted a fan’s sign that read, “J.Lo, marry me?” The singer laughed it off. “I think I’m done with that,” she replied. “Yeah, I tried that a few times.”
I don’t know about you, but it kind of sounds like these two need to have a girls’ night soon. Maybe J.Lo can bring Leah Remini?
