Conrad stans, how are we doing post episode five of The Summer I Turned Pretty? After spending a whole hour squealing at my TV, I’d nearly forgotten about all that engagement-ring uproar from a few weeks ago. But turns out, we were right. The ring isn’t that bad.
In an interview with Variety published on Thursday, Jenny Han, the author of the original books and showrunner of the series, responded to the online debate about Belly’s engagement ring from Jeremiah. “I really wanted something that felt modest, humble, and sweet, that Belly could maybe stack,” said Han. “Just thinking of her style, it’s more simple. She’s not about the flashy rings. It’s not really what she values. I think she would be more touched that he picked it out for her, and he knew what she would like.”

She went on to declare that both her and Lola Tung (who plays Belly, and therefore knows best) liked it. “Either way, people weren’t gonna like what he did,” said Han. “It would be ridiculous if he showed up with a two-carat ring … He can definitely upgrade her in the future, once he’s more settled and making his own money.” In a dream world, Belly would give the ring back, Conrad would give her Susanna’s ring, and they would run off into the sunset together. In reality, though, she should probably just leave the Fisher boys alone.
