If you were worried about the absence of Jennifer Coolidge in this season of The White Lotus, Parker Posey using her southern drawl to talk about a controlled substance every week should provide enough wackiness to tide you over. As the matriarch of the Ratliff family, Posey’s Victoria continues to be a delight, alternating between giving drugged-up snob and typical southern boy mom. And while I thought the whole lorazepam bit would get old after three episodes, it’s only become more interesting, partially because of how it’s being stored.
In this episode, we finally lay eyes on Victoria’s beautiful round, yellow leather pill case (in fact, it’s vintage Louis Vuitton). For a character conspicuously wearing designer clothes and David Yurman jewelry, a chic pill holder feels fitting (and inspiring). Then there’s that charming exterior of the case, which seems to hide whatever rabbit hole these drugs will lead our characters down. While Victoria’s husband, Timothy (Jason Isaacs), teases her about her dependence on lorazepam early on, he’s quick to state that drugs are “not his thing.” (Saxon also quips he doesn’t do drugs before Piper reminds him that he takes Adderall every day.) But Timothy’s business is on the verge of imploding and it seems like he could do time in prison when he gets back home, so he finally caves and pops one of the anti-anxiety pills for himself.
Victoria looks on, gleaming. “They’re not addictive,” she assures him. “You make fun of me, but they work. It’s not a big deal.” She saunters away, her cotton midi dress blowing behind her. Compared to her accessories, her dress in this episode is not as expensive but instead looks like something she could’ve borrowed from her daughter Piper’s closet. The Ganni poplin maxi dress does not seem like an item that a nouveau riche character like Victoria would seek out but rather something she would spot in a college boutique and squeal, “That’s perfect for my trip to Thailand!” The whole ensemble makes for an easy re-creation, though, especially since you can find the vintage pill case for resale. I’m sure that drugs (prescription or otherwise) will continue to pop up throughout this season, but for right now, I’m just daydreaming about putting my SSRIs in a similar compartment.
