Barbra Streisand is going back to the way she was — that is, duetting with whomever she damn well wishes. The legendary performer is readying a sequel to her 2014 album, Partners, titled The Secret of Life. And oh, is it star-studded. This time, Streisand tapped rock icons like Paul McCartney and Bob Dylan, pop singer-songwriters Hozier and Laufey, and country star Tim McGraw. There’s even a diva-packed trio with Mariah Carey and Ariana Grande on “One Heart, One Voice” — because what duet could hold either of them anyway? That song will be a sequel of sorts for Carey and Grande, who previously worked together on a remix of Carey’s “Oh Santa!” with Jennifer Hudson and a remix of Grande’s “Yes, And?” last year.
We’ll have to wait to hear that triple-diva team-up — The Secret of Us is out June 27. But in the meantime, Streisand has shared another taste of the album: Her and Hozier’s duet of “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face.” Originally written by Ewan MacColl, the song is most famous for the rendition by the late Roberta Flack. Their take skews more toward her performance with stirring strings by the London Symphony Orchestra (nothing less than the finest for this diva). “Along with the honour I have to sing on this record with Barbra, I hope this duet offers something of a gesture to Roberta Flack’s incredible legacy,” Hozier said in a statement.
