The first week in May is an especially fruitful time for art. As Frieze, the annual art event, heads to New York, it seems to be everywhere you look. But for brands like Acne Studios, the collaboration between fashion and art is long-standing. For this go-round, Acne is celebrating its partnership with artist Jonathan Lyndon Chase by creating a limited-time exhibition, “Heart Beats Rose,” on display at the label’s Soho store.
Created to play off the architecture of the store, the artwork contains a series of hearts, roses, bows, and other emblems as a nod to the brand, with Lyndon Chase’s signature of often exploring themes of Black subjectivity and queerness. This coincides with the launch of a capsule collection titled Acne Studios Loves Jonathan Lyndon Chase, which is comprised of clothing and homewares featuring the artist’s work. Especially notable is the use of denim, since it is so foundational to the brand.
“Denim is a source of rebellion against forces that tried to control us and dominate our culture,” says Lyndon Chase. “I also am paying homage to the workers and enslaved people who worked with cotton, as well as dyeing the fabrics here in America. We’re living in a time where they are trying to erase our histories, but denim is also a reminder of the history that must be visible.”

To celebrate the opening, Acne Studios hosted a talk between Lyndon Chase and the Cut’s editor-in-chief, Lindsay Peoples. The following night, it hosted notable artists for a dinner at Altro Paradiso. You can check out the exhibition at the Greene Street store through May 11.
