President Donald Trump’s current rotation of hyperfixations include deporting children, flirting with the idea of an illegal third term, and gaudy office décor. Recently, a new subject seems to have found its way into his brain and got stuck there: Pete Buttigieg’s commute to work. At least twice this month, he has spoken at length about Buttigieg’s passion for riding his bike. Honestly? It sounds kind of nice.
Buttigieg is a bike lover. He Zoomed into the 2022 National Bike Summit and, back in 2021, was roasted for having his seat set “too low.” He was spotted riding bikes to and from the White House quite often during his gig as the Biden administration’s Transportation secretary. Economical! Environmentally friendly! No notes. But Trump, apparently, does have some feedback. Earlier this month, he brought up Buttigieg’s favorite mode of transportation during a press conference about air-traffic problems at Newark Airport. “Buttigieg has no clue,” he said. “He drives to work on his bicycle with his, in all fairness, with his husband on the back, which is a nice, loving relationship.” (To be clear, Buttigieg has never been pictured riding with his husband on the same bike.) Is that a compliment? Wistful thinking from a man whose wife appears to be MIA from both their shared home and relationship?
Buttigieg quickly fired back, posting an image of a bike path on X with the caption: “It’s a perfect Up North Michigan morning. Good day for a bike ride, eh?”

Undeterred, Trump returned to the subject this week, when an incoherent string of sentences during a roundtable discussion in Qatar went from timbermen to Newark Airport’s issues to Buttigieg’s bike, all in less than 90 seconds.
“Pete Buttigieg … he goes bicycling to work. He takes a bicycle to work,” the president said. “Can you believe — he’s running the biggest air system in the world, and he takes a bicycle to work. What a — and they say he’s going to run for president. I don’t see it. Who knows, right? But I don’t see it.”

Maybe Trump’s obsession has to do with his own lack of biking skills. I mean, have you ever seen the president ride a bike? In 2022, he pledged to “never, ever ride a bicycle,” and he seems to have followed through. Is that because he won’t? Or is that because, at his ripe age of 78, he can’t? You tell me.
