This is Hollywood, not rocket science. Of course someone was going to try and make Labubus into a movie. Do they have lore? Shut up. Did the game Battleship have lore before Battleship (2012)? Be serious. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sony nabbed the big account. Currently, there is no director, writer, star, or producer attached. It’s also unclear whether the film will be animated or live-action. All we know is that these little guys are so hot right now, and you’d be a chump not to at least try and adapt them for narrative storytelling. Also, if Sony says we’re not getting a KPop Demon Hunters sequel until 2029, maybe live-action is the way to go for the Lamumovie. You don’t want the trend to be over before the film even hits color grading.
Labubus took off on TikTok when Chinese retailer Pop Mart started selling them on Live. They’ve been everywhere for the past 18 months or so: at ICE protests, attached to Rihanna’s purse, and on Karl Marx’s grave. Before that, they were a side character in creator and Hong Kong artist Kasing Lung’s book series, The Monsters. So there is at least a little IP to build on.
