On Thursday, Olympic gold medalist Sha’Carri Richardson was arrested in Florida on speeding charges. Richardson was pulled over while driving 104 miles per hour, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, which also alleged she “had been dangerously tailgating and traveling across lanes of travel to pass other motorists.”
Richardson was booked into jail on a charge of dangerous excessive speeding and has since been released on $500 bond. Under Florida’s “super speeder” law, which went into effect in July, it’s illegal to drive 50 miles per hour over the speed limit or over 100 miles per hour.
This is the second time Richardson has been arrested in the past year. In July, she was arrested at the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport after she was accused of domestic violence. Her boyfriend, sprinter Christian Coleman, did not press charges and later said he didn’t think she should have been arrested. Richardson publicly apologized shortly afterward, saying in a video on her Instagram Stories that there was “a lot of self-reflection, a lot of understanding of not only putting myself in a compromised situation, but somebody that I have a deep care and appreciation for as well.”
