Martha Stewart’s Granddaughter Got Her to Post About ICE

Martha Stewart made a rare political statement about the horrors of ICE operations in Minnesota, and for that you can thank her 14-year-old granddaughter. On Monday, the 84-year-old posted a screenshot of a text from Jude Stewart, Alexis Stewart’s daughter. “I’m not sure it’s excusable to not be speaking up right now,” the text read, seemingly urging her grandmother to take a stance on ICE’s violent crackdown in the Twin Cities. Martha captioned the post, “Grandaughter Jude wrote me a note yesterday … I took it to heart and posted the above:”

“My granddaughter wrote this to me yesterday. She is sensitive to what is going on in our country, as we all should be,” Stewart wrote over her granddaughter’s text. “I am disheartened and sad each and every day that we cannot demonstrate our sympathy for the beleaguered, that we are told immigrants, which most of us are or descended from, are unwelcome, that we cannot show our frustration in peaceful demonstration, and that we can be attacked and even killed by Federal troops.”

“Things must and have to change quickly and peacefully,” she added.

ICE’s siege in Minneapolis escalated this month after federal immigration officers shot and killed Renee Nicole Good and, on Saturday, 37-year-old ICU nurse Alex Pretti. While Minnesotans urge the rest of the country to protest, call their senators, and donate to organizations on the ground, even the most politically quiet celebrities seem to feel it’s time to take a stand. On Monday, Katy Perry posted informational slides on Instagram, urging her followers to speak with their senators and “turn anger into ACTION.”

Members of Bachelor nation — including Becca Kufrin, Greg Grippo, Becca Tilley, and Rachel Lindsay — have also spoken out against the violence, along with Floridian influencer Alix Earle. Even Whitner Slagsvol and Molly O’Connell of Bravo’s Southern Charm posted selfies from a protest, holding signs that read “Fuck ICE.”
