Katy Perry Got AI-ed Onto the Met Gala Carpet (Again)

You’ve heard about the first Monday in May, but what about the first Tuesday? Traditionally, this is the day when Katy Perry confirms that she was not at the Met Gala. For two years now, fans have posted AI-generated images of Katy Perry at the Met Gala, despite the fact that she was not there. The pop star then has to clarify that she was elsewhere, and we are all reminded that her actual best Met Gala outfit was a hamburger suit. Happy Katy Perry AI Hoax Day to all those who celebrate!

During the red carpet last night (which Perry was, again, not at), some enterprising young troll with a knack for generative AI cooked up some photos of Perry at the Met Gala in a combination latex gown and suit jacket and posted them to a “Met Gala 2025” X account. Were this a real image, Perry would probably be on some best-dressed lists this morning. As one X user put it, “Whoever does Katy Perry’s AI met gala fits eats every time.”

In news that kind of makes sense, this is not the first time Perry, who last attended in 2022, has been AI-ed onto the Met Gala carpet. Last year, the images of Perry on the carpet were so convincing that they fooled her own mother. This year, instead of fielding a confusing phone call from her mom, the pop star got ahead of it and had a laugh. She posted the photos to her own Instagram feed early on Tuesday morning, writing, “Couldn’t make it to the MET, I’m on The Lifetimes Tour … P.s. this year I was actually with my mom so she’s safe from the bots but I’m praying for the rest of y’all.”

After a string of bad press surrounding her trip to space with Lauren Sánchez and her performance on the aforementioned Lifetimes tour, it’s nice to be reminded that Perry has always had a sense of humor about herself.
