Francis Ford Coppola is selling seven watches from his personal collection, including one gifted to him by his late wife, Eleanor Coppola. Why, you may ask? “I need to get some money to keep the ship afloat,” Coppola told the New York Times. At least he’s honest!
The director may be strapped for cash thanks to his very expensive and not-so-successful passion project, the 2024 movie Megalopolis. He self-financed the $120 million film by selling a majority stake of his wine business and dipping into his personal savings, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Unfortunately, it was not a sound investment — the movie ended up making just $14.4 million at the box office.
Among Coppola’s timepieces for sale is a one-of-a-kind piece made by Francois-Paul Journe that uses a mechanical hand to indicate the time. In 2021, Coppola sold a similar Journe watch that went for almost $5 million at auction, according to the Times. The bidding for this one will start around $1 million. If you’re in the market for a new fancy watch, Coppola’s collection will go on sale on December 6 through Phillips, an auction site.

The director has said he’s not ready to retire just yet, but I’m getting the impression that he should probably diversify his income. Maybe his granddaughter Romy Mars can set him up with an influencing gig?
