The Grammys Are Turning Up the Heat on ICE

by thenowvibe_admin

On Sunday evening, following a nationwide general strike, musicians and celebrities headed into the Crypto.com arena for the 68th annual Grammy Awards with a lot to say about ICE and the ongoing violence in Minnesota and beyond. Paying tribute to Renee Good, Alex Pretti, Liam Ramos, and other victims of ICE and DHS violence, celebs wore “ICE OUT” and “BE GOOD” pins. In interviews and acceptance speeches, they honored the immigrants in their lives and urged listeners to join them in speaking out. Here’s how everyone spoke out against ICE during the evening.

Billie Eilish and Finneas

Carole King presented the Song of the Year award to Billie Eilish and her brother, Finneas. All three wore “ICE OUT” pins. Eilish used her speech to emphasize that “no one is illegal on stolen land … I feel like we need to keep fighting and speaking up and protesting.” Discerning viewers might have seen her say “Fuck ICE,” which was bleeped out by the censors.

Bad Bunny

Benito, who skipped over the U.S. for his Debí Tirar Más Fotos global tour out of concern that ICE would target concertgoers, cut to the chase when accepting his award for Best Música Urbana Album: “ICE OUT … We are not animals, we are humans, we are Americans.” ICE will be patrolling the Super Bowl next week as Bad Bunny performs the halftime show. Anti-ICE posters inspired by him appeared in San Francisco this week.

Olivia Dean

Accepting the award for Best New Artist, Dean thanked her manager and called attention to her roots as “the granddaughter of an immigrant … I’m a product of bravery, and I think those people deserve to be celebrated.”

Justin and Hailey Bieber

The Biebers walked hand in hand, wearing matching black outfits and “ICE OUT” pins.

Bon Iver

Justin Vernon, who is nominated for Best Alternative Music Album and Best Alternative Music Performance, pinned a whistle on his suit to honor the observers monitoring ICE in Minneapolis. “A week ago, when Alex Pretti was shot and killed in the manner he was shot and killed, I was pretty sure I didn’t have the strength to come out here to L.A. and be a part of all this,” he said. “Then I started seeing the people coming together in Minneapolis and organizing without a central government. I saw them being dissident. I just want to honor them and amplify what they’re doing.”

Samara Joy

On the red carpet, Samara Joy, who’s nominated for Best Jazz Performance and Best Jazz Vocal Album, also wore an “ICE OUT” pin. She said, “I want to stand up. I don’t want to draw attention to myself all the time without recognizing the humanity between myself and all the people around the world who are experiencing such tragedies.”
